1860 - 1948

Jane Price was born in Cheddar, England on the 18th February, 1860. She studied art at the South Kensington School of Art, London. Arrived in Sydney in 1880.

 

Price settled in Melbourne in 1882 becoming friends with Jane Sutherland and Clara Southern. In 1988 she shared a studio with them in Collins Street, Melbourne. She was a close friend of Tom Roberts and became a frequent visitor at the Eaglemont camp of the Heidelberg School painters. She had no private means and often had to earn a living as a nanny or ladies help.

 

Price moved to Sydney in 1907 returning to Melbourne during the war to live in a log cabin near Diamond Creek. She spent the last ten years of her life sharing the home of fellow artist Ina Gregory in St Kilda. Price died in Melbourne in 1948.
